SAP Change Control eNewsletter

From the CEO

David Drake - CEO - RSC Welcome to our tenth SAP Change Control eNewsletter for 2009.

In this issue we extend our discussion of Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) to testing, and change and request management technology integration.

This month we have also announced the great news that Rev-Trac 6.0 has been released. For more information see the following article and be sure to read the press release.

The RSC webinar "A simple approach to effective SAP technical change control process design" is being run on Wed 28th September at 2:00PM (Australian EDT). If you missed it last time, please register.

The Rev-Trac Tip of the Month section is included as always, and I trust you will find it of value. Remember that if you have any Rev-Trac tips of your own, please submit them.

As always, we continue to lead innovation in SAP change control, developing software technology to help you reduce the risks and lower the costs of introducing changes into your SAP systems.

Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) Integration (Part IV)

Last month we discussed the value of impact analysis and change and request management integration, discussing the value of integrating impact analysis into automated change control technologies. This month we are looking at the integration of testing strategies and activities into the change and request management lifecycle.

Testing

Before deploying changes to production systems, testing of the changes according to specific criteria is often a change control requirement.

Testing is conducted to validate and verify that a custom object or configuration change...
  • Meets the business and technical requirements;
  • Works as expected; and
  • Can be implemented with the same characteristics.

The key outcome is reliable and error free deployment of changes.

However, testing can be laborious and often inaccurate when carried out manually and so an increasing number of SAP testing tools are becoming available to eliminate much of the manual process through increased automation.

These tools range from relatively simple through to extremely sophisticated solutions that can do everything from maintaining and automating the running of test scripts through to the logging of the test results.

A simple Google search for 'automated software testing tools for sap' will unearth several quite quickly for you.

Testing and change request management

For ITIL process change evaluation and various audit reasons, testing and the recording of test results needs to be a mandated recording step in the change and request management process. Testing and test results recording then becomes a formalized step in the change management process that may look something like the following:
  • Impact analysis required (Y/N)
  • Impact analysis conducted (Y)
  • Results recorded and impact rated (H/M/L)
  • Test strategy defined (Y)
  • Development (change) completed
  • Testing conducted (Y/N)
  • Test results recorded (Y)
  • Change approved for deployment (Y)
By formalizing testing and test recording as a step in the change control process, the following benefits result:
  • Relevant testing is mandated;
  • Test results are recorded evidence for approvers;
  • Risks to production system damage are reduced; and
  • TCO of managing change is lowered.
However, without some method of enforcement there is the risk of a) a disconnect between what has taken place by way of testing and the recording of the same within change requests and b) it not happening at all.

ALM Testing

Integrated change control technology and automated testing solutions

In order to maximize the benefits of automated testing there exists the opportunity to integrate automated testing solutions into change control technology solutions like Rev-Trac.

By fully integrating change control technology and automated testing solutions, an IT organization can be confident that testing has taken place and that the results are recorded against the change.

As part of the body of audit evidence justifying the approval to production and business user acceptance, the integration of automated testing and test results and change control technology then becomes a strategic component to the overall mitigation of risk and the reduction of TCO.

RSC release Rev-Trac 6.0

After many months in development, RSC are happy to announce that Rev-Trac 6.0 is now released.

In addition to basing development quality requirements on 21 CFR Part 11 and PIC/S Annex 11, the new features of Rev-Trac 6.0 deliver:
  • Enhanced xDeploy package management for greater flexibility when managing non-ABAP packages with the RT-xDeploy add-on;
  • Increased custom fields definition within Rev-Trac requests to allow for multi-line input, allowing more complex data to be associated with requests directly via the Rev-Trac workbench user interface;
  • Enhanced user delegation authority to allow for increased third-party delegate approvals;
  • Enhanced web services providing tighter and more complete integration with third-party solutions;
  • Enhanced configurability for Rev-Trac workflow emails allowing for increased 'own language' customization.
Jonathan Bunker, validation leader of Global Computer Validation at GlaxoSmithKline, said Rev-Trac 6.0 has proven compliant with their company policy for computerized system validation.

"Since regulatory compliance is crucially important to our company, Rev-Trac 6 can now become an important factor in our future SAP-related system changes and transport management strategies."

Rev-Trac 6.0 has been SAP-certified as an ABAP add-on for use with SAP NetWeaver 7.0 and is compatible with all systems from SAP 4.0 onwards.

GlobalView – Process Viewer

Rev-Trac - SAP Change Control Technology

Often Rev-Trac customers have difficulties grasping the interactions and relevance of different areas of Rev-Trac configuration.

With the use of the GlobalView process viewer, it is possible for customers to verify changes to configuration and ensure that their processes have been modified as expected. The Interactive Process Viewer also makes Rev-Trac configuration easy to browse and understand.

For those with access, GlobalView can be accessed by logging into the support area of the RSC website and following the links.

For further information, or to request access to GlobalView, please contact the Rev-Trac support team at support@xrsc.com.
