From the CEO
Firstly, happy Thanksgiving to our US readers for last week. As always, once Thanksgiving is past, the end of the year is upon us!
This month marks the end of the RSC Vendor Fair year, during which you may have met us at one of SAP events throughout the US, Europe and Australia. Be sure to look at the top five change control issues gleaned from our meetings with you and your peers during these events below.
You will find a new segment in this newsletter: Rev-Trac Features and Functions. Over time we will be bringing you snapshots of key Rev-Trac features, designed to build your knowledge of the product and to enhance your understanding of managing your SAP system changes.
Remember to save your spot at our next webinar on "SAP CTS+ Demystified: Managing SAP Change in the mixed SAP ABAP and Java Environment" on the 2nd of December at 2:00 PM EDT (New York).
Also, why not try your luck at the SAP EcoHub contest? Win an Apple® iPod Shuffle (4GB) by posting a solution review or sharing your EcoHub story.
As always, we continue to lead innovation in SAP change control, developing software technology to help you reduce the risks and lower the costs of introducing changes into your SAP systems.
David Drake, CEO and Founder
SAP TechEd Phoenix and Vienna
As you are probably aware, RSC exhibited at TechEd in both the US and Europe last month.
Attending SAP events is important for RSC because it is here we meet with existing Rev-Trac users and customers, meet those considering Rev-Trac, and glean a great deal of information regarding current SAP change control issues and challenges.
Around this time each year we like to publish what the top five SAP change control challenges might be, as raised during conversations with you and your peers.
Keep in mind that this list results from meeting with over 570 booth attendees over both TechEd events, and so is likely to ring true with you as well.
Challenge #1
Managing the project and support stream transport retrofit or transport merging process.
Challenge #2
Managing related or dependent transports from different landscapes and/or different technology stacks in a unified manner.
Challenge #3
Maintaining consistent change control process and documentation requirements to meet internal or external audit requirements.
Challenge #4
Getting SAP Solution Manager Change and Request Manager (ChaRM) to effectively meet change control management requirements.
Challenge #5
Integrating Business Objects changes into the SAP change control process and managing dependent SAP and Business Objects changes.
Now there are a number of ways of resolving these issues of course, and automating and enforcing your change control tasks and processes through use of technology is one of them.
If you would like to understand how Rev-Trac SAP change control technology might be of benefit, perhaps the next article will help.
Rev-Trac Features and Functions
Rev-Trac is a feature rich and powerful SAP change control technology, and so in this new segment we plan to bring you an overview of key Rev-Trac components to give you a greater insight into the potential value of Rev-Trac over time.
Rev-Trac auto-migration
After Rev-Trac has been installed, users may migrate transports using tp or TMS, or they may use Rev-Trac's migration features.
While Rev-Trac itself ultimately releases and automatically migrates transports by calling TMS or tp, Rev-Trac wraps these calls with additional functions.
Only by using Rev-Trac's migration features is it possible to:
Perform overtake and overwrite checking automatically before each import (OOPS)
Approve the post-migration status of a Rev-Trac request automatically following a successful migration
Audit who approved each migration (as opposed to who actually migrated the transport)
For this reason, it is common to withdraw authorisation for the use of tp and TMS from most SAP users some time after Rev-Trac has been installed.
Rev-Trac accurately reports all migrations, regardless of whether they are performed using tp or TMS directly, or under Rev-Trac control.
For further information on Rev-Trac's migration capabilities, please consult the Rev-Trac Administrator Guide, which can be downloaded from the support area of the RSC website.
Rev-Trac Tip of the Month
Rev-Trac 6.0
As of July 2009, all further offerings of the Rev-Trac 5.0 product will be rebadged under the name Rev-Trac 6.0.
In all other aspects they are the same product and should be treated as such when applying the latest Support Package Stack.
No conversion of any kind is required when applying Rev-Trac 6.0 SPS 01 or above to an existing Rev-Trac 5.0 installation.
The reason for Revelation Software Concepts choosing to re-badge the product is due to a new development process that complies with: US FDA Quality System Regulation (21CFR Parts 11, 210, 211 & 820).
For further information or to download Rev-Trac 6.0 SPS01, please login to the support area of the RSC website and follow the links.
